Christmas is one of the most important holidays in Denmark. It is a time when family and friends gather together. Danes also have a great number of Christmas lunches, where you eat traditional food and drinks while saying Goodbye to the passing year.

Easter follows Christmas in the list of important holidays. It’s also one of the longest vacations of the year, a good reason to meet with family and friends, eat lunch, and enjoy some drinks. Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost all have their own designated beer.

Pentecost is the shortest of the 3 main Danish holidays. As with Christmas and Easter, people usually celebrate by meeting for lunch, drinking, and generally having fun. Pentecost is also a time for coming-of-age celebrations, and many cities celebrate the days with a parade and a carnival.

The 24th of June is Saint John’s Eve. Danes celebrate this day with good food and plenty of alcohol. At the end of the day, people will listen to speeches before lighting the huge bonfire that has been built on each town’s public grounds.

Carnival is bound by many traditions, but the main point is to dress up as heroes and princesses. Children look forward to participating in “rattling,” which are festivities in local communities where kids can take a swing at a barrel filled with candy. It’s kind of like a piñata!
