Eric: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Danish Vocabulary, Lesson 9! In this lesson you'll learn 5 essential words and phrases related to Society and Culture. The Eurovision song contest is a big music contest held in Europe. Every year it’s one of the most watched TV programs in Denmark. In 2002, Danish TV launched a children’s version of this under the name MGP, and in 2003 launched Junior MGP. Denmark joined Eurovision in 1957 and have won a total of 3 times, the latest in 2013.

The X Factor is a British franchised show. At present, it has had 6 seasons and the last show usually tops the charts with over 2 million viewers. Taking into consideration that there are only 5.6 million Danes, 2 million viewers is a great achievement!

Every year the average Dane will attend up to 3 Christmas luncheons, with friends, coworkers, family, and classmates. On the weekends leading up to Christmas and just after, extra buses and trains are put into operation during the night to accommodate the many partygoers. During such luncheons, Danes will eat many traditional cold and warm dishes followed by many glasses of akvavit and beer.

The first Danish revue premiered in 1849 and has been a yearly tradition ever since. There are 2 big revue seasons – summer and around new years. They are a combination of sketches and dance numbers. The sketches usually make fun of the past year, national or international public figures, and are of a political nature or have heavy sensual undertones.

Every Dane would at one point have been part of an association of one kind or another. It’s an important part of socializing and creating communal bonds in Danish society. Most are members of sports clubs, scouts, or other specialized hobby groups. Older Danes, however, will usually join a union, which in Danish are called profession associations.
