INTRODUCTION
In the previous lesson, we covered how to get on the subway. In Denmark, a comfortable way to travel over long distances is to take a train, in Danish tog. Trains are a convenient way to travel long distances, and you will be able to see the beautiful Danish countryside between cities.
GRAMMAR POINT
You can buy long distance train tickets over the internet, at vending machines in stations, or at the ticket office. If you go to the ticket office, you can use this phrase: En billet til (destination), tak.
Let’s say you want to go to Odense.
“One ticket to Odense, please.” in Danish is
En billet til Odense, tak.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) En billet til Odense, tak.
Once more:
En billet til Odense, tak.
If you are not traveling alone, you will need to ask for two tickets or more.
“Two train tickets to Odense, please,” is
To billetter til Odense, tak.
(slow) To billetter til Odense, tak.
To billetter til Odense, tak.
As you can see, instead of billet we say the plural billetter, and add the right amount before it, in this case “2” to.
In the case that you want to buy more than 2 tickets, you just have to replace to with the number you need.

Normally when you ask for a train ticket, you will get a regular type one. In Denmark there are 3 kinds of tickets Standard, First class and Orange budget tickets. And for each kind there are several kinds of wagons for different purposes for which you can reserve a seat. Be aware though that the Orange budget ticket can only be bought online and is fixed to a certain departure, and you have to reserve a seat.
First let’s look at how you ask for a First Class ticket:
En første klasse billet, tak. which means “One First Class ticket please.”
(slow) En første klasse billet, tak.
En første klasse billet, tak.
En is as you know “one”.
Then we have første klasse which means “first class”
(slow) Første klasse.
Første klasse.
And last we have billet, tak.
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
En første klasse billet, tak.
In Denmark the train tickets have a specific name depending on their type so in the case of first class we call it DSB 1’. DSB is the abbreviation for the Danish train company.
So let’s see how the question sounds with the specific name and destination, in our case Odense. Your phrase will sound like this:
En DSB 1’ til Odense, tak.
(slow) En DSB 1’ til Odense, tak.
“One DSB 1’ to Odense, please.”
In the case that you just need the standard ticket, all you have to do is to replace DSB 1’ with Standard. So “One standard class ticket please” will sound like this:
En standard billet, tak.
(slow) En standard billet, tak.
In this case we just replaced “first class” from the first question with standard. Meaning “standard” or “regular”.
Let’s hear both phrases one more time so you can compare them easily.
En første klasse billet, tak.
En standard billet, tak.
Normally if you don’t say what type of ticket you want, you will be asked : “Regular or First Class?” In Danish, that’s Standard billet eller DSB 1’?
(slow) Standard billet eller DSB 1’?
Standard billet eller DSB 1’?
In this sentence eller means “or” and you have the two names of the types of tickets you can buy at the station.
In this case your answer will be shorter.
DSB 1’, tak if first class is what you want and
Standard, tak for a regular class ticket.
Now for the second option, you will be faced with whether or not you want to reserve a seat. If you want one, simply add this after ordering your ticket:
Og en pladsbillet, tak.
“And a seat reservation, please.”
The important word to remember here is pladsbillet. Which means “seat reservation.”
(slow) Pladsbillet.
Pladsbillet.
