INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we will introduce a phrase that will surely come in handy for capturing your memories on film or memory card. Denmark has many beautiful places, so you will want to take lots of pictures of landscapes and monuments. And sometimes you will want to be part of the picture or include someone else too. For those times, the question “Can you take a picture of us/me?” will be invaluable!
GRAMMAR POINT
Let’s first imagine you want to take a picture with your friends. The question you will definitely need to ask is “Can you take a picture of us?”
In Danish that is:
Kan du tage et billede af os?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Kan du ta-ge et bi-lle-de af os?
Once more:
Kan du tage et billede af os?
The first words, kan du are “can you”.
(slow) Kan du.
Kan du.
The next words, tage et, can be translated as ”take a”.
(slow) Tage et.
Tage et.
Next we have billede which means “picture”.
(slow) Billede.
Billede.
Af os means “of us”
(slow) Af os.
Af os.
All together, that’s
(slow)Kan du tage et billede af os?
Kan du tage et billede af os?
The phrase we just learned is casual, so let’s see how the formal version sounds:
Kunne du tage et billede af os, tak?
(slow) Kunne du tage et billede af os, tak?
Kunne du tage et billede af os, tak?
“Could you take a picture of us, please?”
If you are on your own and you want to ask someone to take your picture, you’ll ask:
Kunne du tage et billede af mig, tak?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Kunne du tage et billede af mig, tak?
Again at natural speed:
Kunne du tage et billede af mig, tak?
In this sentence, we just exchanged “us” with mig or “me” in English.
Kunne du tage et billede af mig, tak?
If there is no need to be polite say Kan du tage et billede af mig? This is the informal version of the previous question.
(slow) Kan du tage et billede af mig?
Kan du tage et billede af mig?
