INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we're going to take a trip to the post office. “Post office” is Posthus in Danish.
(slow) Posthus.
Posthus.
In this lesson, we're going to work on getting your postcards, letters, and packages home. The expression we use for this is: "I would like to send this to..." and then the desired destination. For this lesson, we'll use France.
GRAMMAR POINT
In Danish, “I would like to send this to France" is:
Jeg vil gerne sende den her til Frankrig.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Jeg vil ger-ne sen-de den her til Fran-krig.
Once more:
Jeg vil gerne sende den her til Frankrig.
The first words, jeg vil, is usually translated as “I want” but in this situation, it translates as “I would”
(slow) Jeg vil.
Jeg vil.
Next we have gerne, which in English will be “like”.
(slow) Gerne.
Gerne.
Then we have sende, which means “send”.
(slow) Sende.
Sende.
It’s followed by den her which means “this”
(slow) Den her.
Den her.
Next we we have til, which means “to”.
(slow) Til.
Til.
And at the end we have the name of the country, in our case Frankrig.
(slow) Frankrig.
Frankrig.
Altogether, we get
(slow)Jeg vil gerne sende den her til Frankrig.
Jeg vil gerne sende den her til Frankrig.
Literally, this means “I would like to send this to France.”
Let's look at the other words. We were talking about packages, letters, and postcards, so let’s try to send a postcard!
“Postcard” in Danish is Postkort.
(slow) Postkort.
Postkort.
“I would like to send this postcard to France” in Danish is
Jeg vil gerne sende det her postkort til Frankrig.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Jeg vil gerne sende det her postkort til Frankrig.
Once more:
Jeg vil gerne sende det her postkort til Frankrig.
Det her postkort means "this postcard." And since “postcard” is neutral gender, the denominator changed to det
(slow) Det her postkort.
Det her postkort.
So you simply insert the thing after this and change the denominator to the right gender. So den her in the first sentence is replaced with det her postkort to get:
Jeg vil gerne sende det her postkort til Frankrig.
Now let’s try “letter”, which in Danish is brev.
(slow) Brev.
Brev.
“This letter” is:
(slow) Det her brev.
Det her brev.
By substituting this into the first sentence, we can get:
“I would like to send this letter to France” or
Jeg vil gerne sende det her brev til Frankrig.
(slow) Jeg vil gerne sende det her brev til Frankrig.
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
Jeg vil gerne sende det her brev til Frankrig
.
Now let’s try to send a package. In Danish, “I would like to send this package to France” is:
Jeg vil gerne sende den her pakke til Frankrig.
(slow) Jeg vil gerne sende den her pakke til Frankrig.
“Package” in Danish is pakke and is a common gender noun.
(slow) Pakke.
Pakke.
Altogether we have:
Jeg vil gerne sende den her pakke til Frankrig.
Now the package requires a closer look, which we’ll address in the next lesson.
