Becky: Top 25 Danish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 10: How is the Danish food?
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Danish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question How is it? when referring to food. In Danish this is
Loke: Hvordan smager det?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Loke: hvordan
Becky: meaning “how”.
Loke: (Slow, by syllable) hvordan
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Loke: hvordan

Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Loke: smager
Becky: which in this case means “taste”.
Loke: (Slow, by syllable) smager
Becky: Now repeat.
Loke: smager

Becky: Listen to the first 2 words of the question and repeat.

Becky: Now use the same sentence structure, but, replace delicious with good.
Loke: godt

Becky: Listen to the entire sentenceagain, this time with good
Loke: Det er godt.
Becky: It’s almost exactly the same. Just replace the word delicious. Say “It's good.”

Loke: Det er godt.
Becky: Now, replace good with a little salty.
Loke: lidt salt
Becky: a little salty
Loke: (slow) lidt salt (regular) lidt salt
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a little salty
Loke: Det er lidt salt.
Becky: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace good. Say “It's a little salty”.

Loke: Det er lidt salt.
Becky: Nowinstead of saying it’s a little salty try to say it’s great or
Loke: fantastisk
Becky: Again, great
Loke: (slow) fantastisk (regular) fantastisk
Becky: Listen to the whole sentence again, but this time with great
Loke: Det er fantastisk.
Becky: The beginning stays the same. Simply replace a little salty. Say “It's great.”

Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Denmark and someone asks you your opinion on the food you're eating. You want to say it's delicious. Respond to the question.
Loke: Hvordan smager det? (five seconds) Det er lækkert.
Becky: Now, you want to say it's good. Respond to the question.
Loke: Hvordan smager det? (five seconds) Det er godt.
Becky: Now you want to say it's a little salty. Answer the speaker's question.
Loke: Hvordan smager det? (five seconds) Det er lidt salt.
Becky: You want to say it's great. Respond to the question.
Loke: Hvordan smager det? (five seconds) Det er fantastisk.
Becky: Now you want to know what -that- person thinks of the meal. Ask the question
